Five matches on tap as Bermuda battles Caymans

April 2010

The Bermuda national rugby teams will be embarking on a tour from April 29 to May 3 to Cayman Islands, and they will be competing against the host nation. The senior match is being recognized by the International Rugby Board as a full International match, with “caps” being awarded to the players.

Also travelling will be representative sides at U10, U12, U14 & U16 age levels. The only age group not travelling is the U19 team who are training and gearing up for the U19 Caribbean Championships in August.

A strong squad has been named to travel, as this will be a tough match against a quality opponent and the game will count towards Bermuda’s IRB World Ranking status. Currently Bermuda is in 57th place out of 95 ranked countries.

The squads have been training hard several times a week since the season ended under the guidance of the national team coaches. Each of the age groups have done car washes, bake sales, a KBB cleanup and other functions to raise funds for the players to go directly towards their costs.

The Bermuda junior section is the current holders of the Conyers Youth Challenge Cup (sponsored by CD&P) which was won last year against Cayman on Bermuda soil. The objective of the tournament is to develop youth players internationally in both countries and to promote the ideals of friendship, enjoyment and fellowship through international youth competition.

The tournament is played according to Continuum Rules as posted in the Rugby Football Union for the under ten and twelve age groups, as well as full International Rugby Board Age grade rules for the under fourteen and sixteen age groups.

The country that has the best overall record of match wins and losses wins the Conyers Youth Challenge Cup.

The event was also the first rugby event in Bermuda streamed live over the Internet and was available for those in Cayman and worldwide who could not be here. The matches this year will also be streamed live from the Cayman official live streaming site This channel will be streaming all games live on both days. On Saturday, May 1 there will be warm up games and mini tournaments for the youth while the men will be training.
