We are proud of Conyers Cayman Islands Partner Erik Bodden, who participated in the opening ceremony of the Grand Court on 12 January 2022, in his capacity as President of the Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association (CILPA).

‘It was a great honour to support the motion to open the Grand Court for the year 2022 and to deliver a speech on behalf of CILPA’ commented Mr. Bodden.

In his address, Erik raised awareness of the recent achievements of CILPA and recapped some of the goals for the coming year. Most notably, Erik highlighted the work which has been done by the various working groups, around the Legal Services Act, which was published on 7 January 2021 (although it has not yet been commenced). Amongst other things, the Act introduces a formal code of conduct and modernises the regulation of attorneys practicing Cayman law, both within the Islands and outside the jurisdiction. The Act is essential for safeguarding the Cayman Islands’ position as a preeminent jurisdiction for Financial Services.

Erik is a Partner in the Litigation, and Trust & Private Client teams at Conyers. He joined the firm after qualifying and practicing as a Barrister in England. Erik was elected CILPA President in 2021, and has served on the CILPA Counsel since its formation in 2018, following the merger of the Cayman Islands Law Society (CILS) and the Caymanian Bar Association (CBA).

CILPA is the representative body for the legal profession in the Cayman Islands, whose 600+ members represent approximately 70% of the Cayman Islands legal profession. For more information on the Cayman Islands Legal Practitioners Association, please visit here.

The Grand Court opening ceremony was broadcast live on CIGTV and is available to watch here.
