Congratulations to four of our Hong Kong Partners Christopher Bickley, Norman Hau, Paul Lim and Mark Yeadon on their recent recognition in Asian Legal Business Offshore Client Choice 2023.

Upon their recognition, Christopher, Mark, Norman and Paul shared their thoughts on how to maintain the edge in the increasingly competitive legal services market and the delivery of professional services to clients.

Christopher Bickley, Partner and Head of Hong Kong Office
Board Member Christopher Bickley joined Conyers in 1994 and has been Head of the Hong Kong office since September 2012. Christopher commented on his thoughts on the client’s changing needs as we enter the post-pandemic phase and said, “clients have become quite familiar with offshore structures. So most of the time they are increasingly looking for very specific advice whether in relation to structure or an issue that they are facing”. He is named among the top 10 outstanding lawyers on the 2019, 2020 and 2021 Asian Legal Business Offshore Client Choice Lists.

Mark Yeadon, Partner and Hong Kong Head of Disputes and Restructuring
Mark is the Head of Disputes and Restructuring in Hong Kong since 2021. He has brought 40 years of experience in the onshore legal market to Conyers. He expressed his views on what he thinks our clients value most from offshore law firms, “excellent responsiveness and to have confidence that the lawyers in the firm’s Hong Kong or Singapore office will genuinely work as one team with their colleagues in the firm’s offshore offices. It goes without saying that the legal work and support should be first rate” said Mark. He also suggested “having regular catch ups with clients which will give the client the opportunity to express views on the quality of our work” as one of the processes he has in place to measure clients satisfaction.

Norman Hau, Partner
Norman has been central to Conyers’ dispute resolution practice in Hong Kong since joining a decade ago and was the first litigator in the Hong Kong office. He is a seasoned commercial litigator with extensive experience in restructuring and insolvency matters and shareholders disputes in Hong Kong, Bermuda, BVI and Cayman Islands. He was recognised in the 2022 edition of Asian Legal Business Offshore Client Choice List along with Paul Lim and has recently been recognised as a leading individual in the 2023 Edition of Legal 500 Asia-Pacific. Norman thinks our clients value “the readiness to resolve any given offshore law issues effectively” most from offshore law firms, “bearing in mind commercial considerations, local business culture, and onshore legal and regulatory frameworks”.

Paul Lim, Partner
Since joining Conyers in 2007, Paul has worked on a number of significant debt capital markets transactions which have involved Bermuda, BVI and Cayman property infrastructure companies listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, including PRC utility and energy state owned enterprises. Paul expressed his opinion with us on what sets Conyers apart from others and how he stood out as excellent in the way when delivering client services as an offshore lawyer, commenting, “as Conyers prides itself in providing premium legal services, to effectively apply and delivery such services, I listen to the client with special care and attention and try to be responsive rather than reactive to the clients demands, offering practical and unique options or alternative solutions (as required) to meet clients needs in any transaction or legal issues arising. This way you cultivate trust and with good ‘bedside manners’ the client will be more comfortable and engaging relying on us as the go to person for future matters”.

The Asian Legal Business Offshore Client Choice recognises outstanding offshore lawyers who have exceeded client expectations. It surveys lawyers’ commitment to legal services and ability to provide sound advice.
