Cayman Islands law firm Conyers Dill & Pearman held a very special dress down day this month in support of Nathan Bendo-Carias, a P1 student at Red Bay Primary School who is in need of open heart surgery and a heart monitor to treat a serious heart condition which he developed after hurricane Ivan.
At five years of age, Nathan has a membrane growing which threatens to block the main valve to his heart, while another area of his heart is leaking blood. Surgery to rectify this is expected to cost $3,000 and has to be performed by overseas specialists. Travelling costs for Nathan’s mother are not covered by insurance.
Conyers initially planned its dress down day to support all primary schools as part of the Conyers Community program. However, as soon as staff and partners at the law firm heard of Nathan’s plight, the decision was made to donate to the appeal. Conyers staff and partners dressed in Red Bay Primary’s colour – red – while school students dressed in professional work attire.
Richard Finlay, Managing Partner of Conyers’ Cayman Islands office, commended staff for their decision to support Nathan and his family: “I am delighted our staff have so readily given their support to Nathan and his family. Our prayers are with Nathan for a speedy recovery.”
Red Bay Primary has been hosting dress down days for several Fridays to help raise the funds needed to cover the costs of Nathan’s surgery.
